Were all on our own happiness journey. And we all go about it in different ways. Yoga, meditation, colouring, the list of things we can do is endless. But we can also eat our way to happiness. Or at least give ourselves the best fighting chance possible, simply by adding a few things into our diet.
Here are our go-to happy foods.
Walnuts and Flaxseed
Nuts and seeds are packed with some serious goodness. These two in particular are filled with alpha-linolenic acid. Which means they help reduce inflammation in the body, which has been strongly linked to depression. When we are low in ALA, we also tend to have low levels of dopamine, and serotonin, the two happy chemicals in the brain. Top your breakfast with a handful of these to start the day happy.
Dark Chocolate and Cacao
Cacao and subsequently dark chocolate, is filled with the chemical polyphenols, which is said to boost our mood. Its the ingredient cacao that gives it this chemical, so when choosing a treat to munch on, go for something with as little sugar and dairy as possible, to get the biggest dose of the good stuff.
Our brain needs good fats to stay strong and healthy and keep our mood regulated. Coconut is full of medium-chain triglycerides, which are these good fats we speak of. While coconut is often found in high calorie, high sugar foods, simply add some unsweetened coconut flakes to sweet or savoury dishes for an added boost.
We know our greens are good for us, but these guys are pretty special. Theyre
one of the top plant-based sources of tryptophan. Tryptophan acts as a base for the creation of serotonin, which helps regulate mood. Asparagus are also high in folate, which helps to combat depression.
